Day 20, Saturday, October 3, 2009 - 222 miles

Today started off with sun and scattered clouds as we prepared to depart Acadia. Traffic was kind as we began the southern leg of our tour. It wasn't very long before we drove into rain showers, and we were forced to endure them the rest of the day. We experienced a couple diversions on our way to Bath, ME, to visit the Maine Maritime Museum. The first was an accident blocking US1. The police officer directed us onto another road. He didn't tell us what road to use to get back to the highway. We wound up following Gretchen's advice and travelled about 15 miles on back roads to get back to US1. We also had a couple wrong turns as Gretchen was not up to speed on latest road changes.

We found the museum which is located next to the Bath Iron Works, and after lunch in the trailer, we went in. The museum consists of several buildings, the main housing wonderful paintings and models of boats and ships built in Bath and paintings and photos of sailors and ship captains from the 1700's through mid 20th century. There were also a number of artifacts. In addition to the main building, there are a number of out buildings that used to house the boat builders, each containing actual tools and materials that were used. They also have a restored ship and a captain's residence to tour. It was worth the effort to go, despite the rain.

About 4:00, we continued south. With the weather so bad, I decided to take the freeway. It was 4 hours to Springfield, MA, so we stopped about half way here in Portsmouth, NH. After some fairly good Chinese food, we are camping at a Wal-Mart parking lot. I will post some pictures when I get wifi again.

  1. We have "camped" in name brand truckstops also. Just made sure we were on the car side and way in back, away from the heavily used parking areas.
